September 24th 2009 Dear Skyview School Families, Over the many years that I have been a part of the Skyview School community, there have been a number of times that I have been left speechless. Yesterday proved to be one of those days. Within the Intermediate 3- 4 classroom the students have been reading the book, Ribsy, which makes a reference to time capsules. This sparked Ms. Miedema’s memory that Skyview has had a time capsule floating around for a number of years and nobody quite remembered when it had been put together. So Ms. Miedema dragged it out for her students, thinking the experience would provide her students with a relevant real-life connection to the book. As they opened it, everyone realized that the time capsule had been put together and sealed exactly ten years ago to the day! This of course created great excitement among the students and left everyone awestruck. Fall Break Incredible as it seems, we only have one more week until the end of the first quarter. Skyview School’s twoweek Fall Break begins on Friday, October 2nd and ends on Sunday, October 18th. The office will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. During the break, teachers will complete 1st Quarter Assessments, deconstruct their classrooms from first quarter studies, prepare their classrooms for the second quarter, develop compelling curriculum, and take some well-deserved rest time. Annual Rummage Sale Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our annual rummage sale. This past Saturday the school earned close to an $850 to help support the purchase of curricular materials. We are also happy to announce that we raised a total of $290 during our 50/50 raffle campaign and Shahana Turpin was selected as the winner. Quarterly Conferences Sign-up sheets for Parent-Teacher Conferences (Kindergarten through Intermediate 3-4 levels) and Parent- Teacher-Student Conferences (Intermediate 5-6 through Middle School) are posted in the main building. Please remember that these important conferences are scheduled for the first week back from the Fall Break, Monday, October 19th through Thursday, October 22nd. Also, remember that these are early release days; school is dismissed at 1:30 pm that week. As a courtesy to working families, we will provide childcare on the playground from 1:30- 3:00 pm. As such, you may pick up your children between 1:30 pm and 3:00 pm that week. Kids & Company Kids & Company will be having a one-week Fall Camp program for working families during the week that Prescott Unified School District is out for Fall Break, October 12th-16th. Go to www.prescottschools.com or call them directly at 541-2295 for details. No Pizza Days As is customary at Skyview School, there will be Thursday pizza the last Thursday of the quarter (October 1st), but there will not be pizza on the first Thursday of the quarter (October 22nd). Fall Festival Once again, please mark your calendar for Skyview’s 14th Annual Fall Harvest Festival, scheduled for the first Friday of the second quarter, October 23rd, from 5:00-6:30 PM. Join us for fun-filled activities that celebrate the changing of the seasons. Raffle for Quilts Skyview School has two quilts up for raffle. The Intermediate 3-4 students made one of the quilts in 2008- 2009 and Sarah Vidas, our Title I Instructor, donated the second. They will be raffled off at the Fall Harvest Festival, October 23, 2009. If you would like to buy a ticket they will be $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 starting Monday, September 28th and will sell through October 23rd. We will display the quilts in the hallway by the Intermediate 3-4 classroom. Please take a peek and buy a ticket or two. Cooler Temperatures The mornings and evenings are beginning to reflect the change of season from summer to autumn. While the days will likely remain warm through October or even November, the mornings will become more and more brisk. Please be sure to dress your children in light jackets or sweaters. As the weather continues to change, please provide hats and gloves. Except in extreme conditions, we ask that children play outside every day during recess, at lunch, and in the morning before classrooms are open. As such, they must be dressed for the outdoors. At Skyview School, we believe in the importance of fresh air, outdoor play, and developing an appreciation for the change of seasons. Run/Walk Club The Run/Walk Club will meet at the Skyview picnic tables on Wednesday, September 30th at 3:10 PM. The group will then depart for Forest Trails, where they will be doing their training. Parents will follow Terry out there and wait while they train or are free to join them. Beyond Words Middle School students Hannah Kelly, Madeline Tilyou, and Jeff Cedro, who are part of the cast for Mural Mice, asked me to notify the school community that the Prescott Public Library will be celebrating the new Beyond Words mural with four Mural Mice plays and a formal mural dedication. The plays will be performed on the Library Lawn on Friday, September 25th at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. It will also be performed Saturday evening at 6 p.m., with the Beyond Words mural dedication to follow at 7:30 p.m. This might be a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours with your children. Be sure to wear your ears and tails! Skyview Hats Our second order of Skyview hats has finally arrived. We have available both adult and child sizes. Please see Dianne in the front office if you are interested in purchasing one or more of them for your family. This will be the last Thursday letter of the quarter. Next Thursday, the last day of the first quarter, the quarterly Skyview Skylines will be distributed in lieu of a Director’s letter. I encourage all families to read about the good work being accomplished throughout the school in this quarterly publication and I want to thank the entire Skyview School community for a remarkably successful first quarter. Enjoy some family time during the upcoming break! Sincerely yours, Scott McCreery
